A bit about the Pomeranian

Belonging to the Toy Group, the Pomeranian is a vivacious, intelligent, lively extrovert.
As a descendent of sled dogs from Lapland and Iceland, the Pomeranian is the
hardiest of all the Toy Breeds. And like a box of chocolates, you can never have just one!

Pomeranian colours vary widely from Chocolate, Black, Cream, Orange/Sable, Parti-Colour, Blue, and many more. Sizes vary also from 3 -10 lbs or more. The Kennel Club standard is of a weight between 4 to 5 1/2 lbs. The American Kennel Club standard
is of a weight between 3 to 7 lbs. Within the breed standards for the AKC and The KC (UK) you will not find the description (s) "teacup " or "miniature " just as you will not
find a "giant" Labrador. A Pom is a Pom!


                                 The first dog show in the UK was held in 1859. It was not however, until 1870
                                 that registration of the Pomeranian was started with The KC. In 1888, while
                                 visiting Italy, Queen Victoria became so enamoured by these delightful dogs,
                                 she later kept a kennel of them and they soon gained popularity.

                                            IT'S A POM THING!

Many Pomeranians exhibit this behaviour. Although it looks threatening and aggressive,
she is actually very excited here as my husband is showing her the lead just behind me. She
is anticipating going for a walk. She also 'smiles' when she's about to be brushed and upon greeting
someone she really likes. It's a Pom thing!

PUPPY UGLIES

Pomeranian puppies go through a stage called 'The Puppy Uglies' at about 4 -6 months of age.
This happens as they are changing from their puppy coat into their adolescent or sometimes,
into their adult coat. Pomeranians are double coated, having a thick soft under coat and ideally a
longer harsh top coat. When puppies start to loose their soft fluffy under coat, you are left with the
longer spiky tufts of the top coat coming through. You may think 'What happened to my gorgeous fluffy puppy'!
But fear not, this stage will pass at about 12 -18 months the coat will even out and thicken.
